Lebanon: AMA starts rebuilding tents at al Wafaa camp following fire outbreak
AMA has started rebuilding the tents and homes of residents of the al-Wafaa camp for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, allowing them to return to a form of normality.
The fire, which broke out on 5 October, displaced over 200 people from their homes, leaving them with no food, clothing or belongings. Many children were amongst those impacted, several of whom have previously experienced trauma or displacement.
The fire destroyed over 85 homes, quickly spreading to engulf peoples’ fondest memories and possessions.
AMA responded by providing hot meals, blankets and water bottles to all of those impacted by the fire.
Our teams on the ground have also started rebuilding homes and tents this week, ensuring the structures are well-built and sustainable.
The rapid response in re-building the residents’ home was essential as many were forced to seek shelter with friends or relatives nearby.
As winter approaches, the building of these tents is crucial as temperatures drop drastically, and with a lack of heating and electricity, many families are left to battle the cold with no assistance. The harsh conditions cause illness and in some extreme cases, the death of young infants who are unprotected against the cold.
AMA’s Lebanon emergency response team is continuing their presence on the ground by visiting the families impacted and ensuring their needs are met.
In order to continue on our work, urgent donations are still needed to supply beneficiaries with the necessary care and aid they need.
Donations can be made online or by calling AMA offices, citing the reference of Al Wafaa camp.
