Description
AMA is on the ground in Turkey responding to the earthquake which devastated large parts of Turkey and Syria on Monday morning.
The earthquake, which was a magnitude of 7.5, has claimed the lives of thousands of people and has left thousands more homeless amidst harsh winter conditions.
AMA is distributing blankets, food and winter essentials to people who have been left without any belongings in Turkey, while temperatures reach below freezing.
Many of those who have been affected by the earthquake in Syria are displaced people, and have limited access to vital resources.
Many people have been left trapped under the rubble of buildings, while others are trying to flee to safety.
Our teams are handing out food to people, as they wait for news about their loved ones in the snow and cold temperatures.
The earthquake is one of the most deadly in Turkey since 1900, and has also left hospital buildings destroyed.
Two major hospitals in Hatay cities of Iskenderun and Antakya have collapsed following the earthquake.
AMA’s CEO Imraan Choonara sent out an urgent plea to donors, requesting for them to help assist aid organisations in reaching those in need.
“We have trucks heading towards the areas affected distributing winter essentials as the weather is freezing and people are left without any form of shelter. Many are waiting to hear if their loved ones are alive, we urgently need to act,” he said.
Donations can be made to AMA through our website or by calling our offices which will go towards distributing blankets and food.
